Exercise 3 - Question-to-Passage Matching
Read the short passage. Then choose the statement that is supported by the passage.
The conventional account of the Industrial Revolution attributes its origins almost exclusively to British technological ingenuity — the steam engine, the spinning jenny, the power loom. More recent scholarship, however, has begun to complicate this narrative. Historians now point to the largely unacknowledged role of colonial extraction in providing both the raw materials and the captive markets without which industrial expansion would have been economically untenable. This is not to deny the significance of mechanical innovation, but rather to insist that such innovation operated within, and was made possible by, a wider system of imperial economic relations.
